Lameness Corner

January 5, 2017 by Chris Camp, DVM

With the New Year I’d like to introduce one newer, promising product and another that recently had some excellent research results supporting its use.

The newer therapy is called OsPhos. OsPhos is an injectable product that first came out in Europe to treat navicular disease. We are now using it to treat not only navicular disease, but also many forms of arthritis. It can be particularly effective on hock and coffin joint arthritis. OsPhos works by slowing down the remodeling of bone. It is similar to medications people take to treat osteoporosis. We have been using OsPhos extensively, and in our experience, it helps some horses by making them move more comfortably, and it helps others by prolonging their competitive careers.

The second product is the oral joint supplement Equithrive. We have been using Equithrive for a number of years with good results. This year, the company had their product tested by researchers at a leading veterinary college. The results showed excellent improvement in the horses receiving Equithrive compared to the horses that were not. This study specifically focused on hock arthritis in horses 15 years of age and older. Equithrive also shows promise, along with a similar product called Metabarol, for help in managing Equine Metabolic Syndrome.

If you think one or both of these products might be beneficial to your horse, give us a call and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
