How We Began
Del Oeste Equine Hospital has been serving Western Oregon and the Southern Willamette Valley area for more than 40 years. Dr. Francis Reedy began as an associate at an existing local practice, Q Street Animal Hospital in Springfield, owned by Dr. Larry Mullarkey and his wife Elizabeth. In 1973, Dr. Reedy purchased the large-animal component of the Q Street business, and began to practice on his own.

But not for long. The following year, Francis needed an associate. A Kansas State Veterinary graduate, he called his midwestern alma mater. He contacted a recent graduate contemplating a move to Texas, newly minted Dr. Richard Mosier. Rich “looked up Oregon on the map and bought a plane ticket.” He had never visited Oregon, but thought it would be “more trail-worthy.” He found it to be so, and soon joined Dr. Reedy’s young practice.
Our Name
Our name, “Del Oeste,” was coined with some help from a contractor working on a new building for the hospital. Francis and Rich were under a time crunch to come up with a name for their business registration and for signs. They felt the local area suffered from a severe case of name-sameness. Hundreds of businesses called “Eugene This” and “Lane County That.” Dozens named “Emerald Whatchamacallits” and “Emerald Valley Doodads.” Several “Prairie Road Thingamajigs.”
The contractor said, “Hey, I’ve got a Spanish dictionary!” One name soon rose to the top — and stuck.
The new practice moved into the Prairie Road location in 1976. Four years later, Dr. Reedy moved on to other interests, selling the practice to Dr. Mosier. Dr. Chris Camp came on board in 1994 and became a partner in 2006. In 2008, Dr. Kathy Connell joined the practice, and became a partner in 2018.
New Location
In December 2022, we moved into a much larger facility at 29015 W Meadowview Road, between Eugene and Junction City. This new facility will give us room to grow, and includes a large indoor arena. The Meadowview property was formerly known as the Whispering Meadows boarding facility.
